At Cork ARC Cancer Support House, we provide a range of one-to-one therapies which offer support for patients and their loved ones. Complementary therapies are therapies that can be used together with standard medical treatment to help you feel better emotionally and to manage side effects and symptoms. All of our therapies fully conform to best medical practice. Therapeutic massage, reflexology and acupuncture are available by appointment at our centre in Cork city, and therapeutic massage and reflexology are available at our centre in Bantry. Our holistic and complementary therapies are available by appointment.
When cancer becomes part of your life, it is sometimes difficult to find words to ease your fears and anxieties. A gentle touch from an experienced massage therapist can settle those fears and create a space of safety and understanding. The comfort from this can help you get through those tough days and find a place for your body to relax, even if just for a little while. There are many myths about massage for someone with cancer and it’s not the same massage will suit everyone. We work with the individual and adapt the touch, working with best, evidence-based, practice to complement the medical model. Massage therapies can help you to relax and feel better in yourself, and may also reduce stiffness and fatigue, helping you to sleep better and improve fatigue.
Acupuncture involves putting tiny, hair-thin needles into the body at particular points. These needles are left in place for a few minutes and then removed by the practitioner. Research shows that acupuncture works by stimulating nerves, releasing endorphins in the spinal cord and brain, thereby relieving pain. It also releases serotonin, a pain reliever which can promote a feeling of wellbeing. This combination can help to reduce cancer symptoms.
Acupuncture can help symptoms such as pain, insomnia, fatigue, dry mouth, breathlessness and hot flushes due to cancer treatments.
Reflexology involves the application of pressure to points on the hands and feet. It can help to lift your mood or help you to cope with pain, stress and anxiety.
Reflexology works in a similar way to acupuncture. In reflexology, it is thought that there are certain points on the feet and hands that correspond to the organs and glands in the body. By pressing and massaging these points it can stimulate energy pathways in the body, and where these pathways are blocked reflexology aims to unblock them, allowing the energy to flow freely and restoring balance to the body.
Reflexology can help you to relax, cope with stress and anxiety, relieve pain, and lift your mood to provide a feeling of wellbeing.
